Houston’s Uptown district is dominated by the Galleria shopping district. This expansive mixed-use development comprises the seventh largest shopping mall in the United States. It offers a wide selection of fashion boutiques and upscale restaurants. Galleria is known throughout Houston as one of the city’s most important commercial areas.
The names Galleria and Uptown are often used interchangeably to refer to the entire Uptown area. Uptown also contains the open-air Uptown Park shopping mall. There is more than 23.6 million square feet of office space within the Uptown area, making Uptown Houston the 17th largest business district in the entire United States. More than 2000 companies are located within the vicinity.

The Uptown areas development boomed during the 1970s and ‘80s, thanks to soaring profits in the local energy sector. Many of the distinctive skyscrapers which form Uptown’s skyline were constructed during this period, including the 901 foot tall Williams Tower.

The Galleria mall spans 2.4 million square foot, containing within it 370 stores, 30 restaurants, two high-rise hotels, and three office towers. There is also a health club and an indoor ice rink.
The Galleria’s anchor stores are currently Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Sak’s Fifth Avenue.
There are a number of outstanding fine dining restaurants within the area. Masraff’s is one of the best-known, offering an outstanding range of American-style seafood, along with a good selection of vegan and gluten-free dishes.
The Melting Pot is among the area’s finest international options, with exceptional Japanese and Mongolian dishes. High-quality, authentic French, Thai, and other international cuisine can also be found within the area.
The Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park is perhaps Uptown’s most unique attraction. The centerpiece of this 2.7-acre park is a 64-foot fountain which recirculates more than 11,000 gallons of water every minute. The beautiful green space surrounding the fountain contains 186 live oak trees. This relaxing space is the best place in the neighborhood to while away a sunny afternoon.
